Samsung, the electronics giant, has today confirmed a data breach after U.S. systems were hacked in order to steal customer data.
According to the company, its systems had been compromised in July 2022. Samsung discovered that personal information of customers was stolen from its network on August 4, and it later corrected the error.
Although the hackers did not steal Social Security numbers or credit cards numbers, they stole the names and contact information of Samsung customers, as well as demographic and date information, birth dates, product registration data, and other personal information.
“Samsung has taken steps to protect the systems affected by the incident after it was discovered. We have engaged an outside cybersecurity firm as part of our ongoing investigation and are cooperating with law enforcement,” Samsung stated.
“The information that is affected by each customer may differ. “We are notifying customers in order to make them aware,” added the company.
Samsung recommends that affected individuals:
- Be wary of unsolicited communication asking you for your personal data or directing you to a website asking for such information.
- Do not click on links or download attachments from suspicious email messages
- Review your accounts for suspicious activity
This is the second data breach Samsung has confirmed since the beginning of the year. In March, the electronics giant stated that Lapsus$, a data extortion organization, had breached its network, stealing confidential information including Galaxy device source code.
The hackers accessed 190GB of archives that contained documents they claimed to have stolen from Samsung’s servers.
